Master of Science in Management (MSM)
The Master of Science in Management degree program is a 36-credit graduate program. It has been designed for the adult working professional whose advancement in the contemporary workplace is increasingly dependent on significant academic achievement in an environment which emphasizes both the theoretical approach to management issues and the opportunity to profit from practical work-related experiences through a unique and intensive method of student interaction. Participants deepen their understanding of the ethical, social, behavioral, economic, and organizational concepts, which are critical to the management of corporations and businesses.
This program serves the needs of a wide range of managers in organizations large and small, particularly those who need to acquire or develop the analytical skills which will enable them to make more effective contributions to the workplace. The program has as its starting point the concept that team effort and spirit are important aspects of organizational success. In addition, advances in technology and the impressive effects of globalization dictate that a manager must be ready for change, understand its requirements, and be able to project its significant consequences for the business entity on the one hand and for the people who function in those entities on the other. Participants bring their own experiences and values to this educational process when they make the commitment to strengthen their personal abilities and skills by contributing in a collegial manner to the success of the group.
The Master of Science in Management curriculum is structured sequentially so that participants enter into one intensive seminar course at a time. These seminar courses or modules generally consist of six four-hour meetings presided over by a member of the faculty who has been trained to facilitate class sessions created expressly for experienced, mature adults. Each seminar is followed by the related and required learning team experience. This unique gathering of four or five degree candidates from the larger group of sixteen to eighteen provides the opportunity for preparation of group assignments, intensive dialogue among colleagues, and the chance to test ideas and evaluate personal behavior in a setting which reflects the problem-solving think tank of the contemporary workplace. The seminars require that each learning team complete a team project, which is prepared for presentation and critique.
This practitioner-oriented program emphasizes managerial development in a changing environment in consideration of ethical and social principles as they apply to real-world situations. Through the design, execution, and oral defense of applied and researched personal projects, students demonstrate that they have mastered the technique of applying theoretical knowledge to the solution of practical problems and decisions. This project serves as the integrating and culminating work in the program. It must demonstrate clearly the student’s effectiveness in bringing together all elements of the Master of Science in Management experience. Each project reflects the essential mission of the College, which seeks to provide an education which is both humanistically enlarging and practical in its application.
Master of Business Administration (MBA)
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program is a 57-credit graduate program designed for the adult working professional. The MBA program has been designed to provide a strong conceptual foundation for successful management of business, and it also emphasizes the development of skills related to creating new value for customers and competitiveness through the completion of an entrepreneurial, intrapreneurial, or business consulting capstone team project. The MBA at Albertus Magnus provides the opportunity to profit from practical work-related experiences through a unique and intensive method of collaborative learning and student interaction.
This degree program serves a wide range of managers in organizations large and small, particularly those who need to acquire or develop analytical and creative problem-solving skills, thus enabling them to make more effective contributions to the workplace. In addition, technological advances and the impressive effects of globalization require that managers be ready for change, understand its strategic requirements, and be able to project its significant consequences for the business entity on the one hand and for the people who function in those entities on the other.
The program has as its hallmark the exploration and study of ethical issues applicable to concepts, cases, and in-practice experiences inherent throughout the course sequence as well as the concept that team-based effort is an important aspect of organizational success. Distinctive components of the curriculum include a fully integrated sequence of seven courses that complete the program, which focus on developing individual and team-based skills in identifying, analyzing, and communicating effectively about unique value creation opportunities for business competitiveness. A comprehensive team capstone project will be developed throughout the final seven courses.
Additional requirements include the development and oral presentation of a management research project, which must be completed prior to entry into the final seven-course sequence. These research and business planning projects ultimately reflect the essential mission of the College that seeks to provide an education that is both humanistically enlarging and practical in its application to real-world situations.
Albertus Magnus College's redesigned MBA program offers the final seven courses (MBA 618–630) of the degree in a blended modality (on ground and online).
